Community groups

Community groups have a huge role to play in caring for our lakes. Schools, places of worship, local and special interest groups all have a role to play!

Here are some things to consider:

• If you have an off-mains sewage treatment system, make sure you understand what’s going on with it. Follow the guidance and regulations here to keep your system in lake-loving condition, and advise your members how to use it properly.
• If you access water bodies or encourage members of your community to enjoy the water, help to prevent the spread of pollution and invasive non-native species (INNS) by following the Greener Boating Code.
• Avoid single use plastics wherever possible. Most plastic litter ends up in our water bodies and eventually in our seas. Choose sustainable alternatives wherever possible, and support your community members to take litter home, put it in the bin, or even attend a litter pick.
• Climate change is a global problem that will also affect us locally. Use any resources efficiently, and don’t forget to tell your members what you are doing and encourage them to do the same.
