Sue Harrison, Office and Events Volunteer

“Volunteering not only keeps my mind active, but also gives me the satisfaction of knowing that my contribution really does make a difference: to me, to the Lake District Foundation, to the local community and, ultimately, to the protection of the very special people, places and landscapes that are the English Lake District.”

Volunteering for a charity – particularly a small, local charity with a small team – is rewarding in a reciprocal, ‘two-way-street’, kind of way.  What do they get out of it?  Free resource, obviously, as I don’t get paid for my work.  But, equally, they get access to my knowledge, skills, contacts and, after a lifetime working in the hospitality industry, they have confidence in my ability to deal with just about anything that is thrown at me.  What do I get out of it?  First and foremost is knowing that I am a valued member of the team, working with a group of people who are passionate about the environment and the Lake District in equal measure. In such a small team, my role is constantly evolving and I often find myself learning new skills or being exposed to new ideas. I love the fact that I get opportunities to be involved in just about anything the organisation is working on – from organising and staffing fundraising events, to communicating with our corporate supporters and fundraisers, to doing sometimes the most mundane (but important) office admin.  Flexibility is key!  The role not only keeps my mind active, but also gives me the satisfaction of knowing that my contribution really does make a difference: to me, to the Lake District Foundation, to the local community and, ultimately, to the protection of the very special people, places and landscapes that are the English Lake District.
