You can make a difference to the area you love

Residents and property owners, you can make a difference

The Lake District is a fantastic place to live and work, and we can all take all steps to keep this place special for future generations to enjoy.

Here are some steps you can take in your property, to keep our lakes clean:

  • If you have an off-mains sewage treatment system, make sure you understand what’s going on with it. Follow the guidance and regulations here to keep your system in lake-loving condition.
  • If you access the water, help to prevent the spread of pollution and invasive non-native species (INNS) by following the Greener Boating Code.
  • Avoid single use plastics wherever possible. Most plastic litter ends up in our water bodies and eventually in our seas. Choose sustainable alternatives wherever possible, and when you are out and about remember take litter home or put it in the bin. Or you could even attend a local litter pick!
  • Climate change is a global problem that will also affect us locally. And any actions we take here will have a wider impact around the globe. The biggest sources of carbon emissions in the Lake District are from our food and travel. Choose local food and drink where possible, and get around by boot, bike, boat or bus when you can. Every car-free day helps!
