About the Lake District Foundation

The Lake District Foundation is the charity for the Lake District.

We fund, collaborate and inspire change on things that matter to the region. By prioritising our natural environment, climate and people, our work is an example of sustainable development in action.

The Lake District Foundation works with everyone who loves the Lake District, including businesses, visitors, community groups and public bodies.

The impact of our work helps inform how this special place is cared for now and in the future. Sharing our work influences policy and long-term strategy, while supporting grassroots projects for immediate local impact.

We bring together everyone who cares about this magnificent part of the planet.

Our History

After 23 years working with the tourism industry, under the name Nurture Lakeland, the Lake District Foundation was established as a charity in 2017.

Since then, we have invested over £2.8 million into the region through our grant-giving programmes.

Working with over 80 community groups and 60 businesses on environmental and cultural projects, we have helped to reduce carbon emissions in the Lake District by over 1100 tons. Our supported projects have planted more than 30,000 trees and 1000 metres of hedgerow.

Our influence and impact are growing year on year as we work towards making the Lake District the best National Park in the world.

Our Aims

We fund, collaborate with and inspire individuals, businesses and community organisations to look after Cumbria and the Lake District.

We support the delivery of the shared aims of the Lake District National Park Partnership, and we are the main fundraising and grant-making partner.

Our ambition is for the Lake District to become the best National Park in the world, inspiring others, through sustainable development in action.

The Lake District Foundation’s priorities include:

  • Climate action
  • Cleaner lakes
  • Supporting biodiversity
  • Inclusion and accessibility
  • Cultural heritage
